Yesterday we went out on a sort of family outing. Nhean came around with a car a friend of his had lent/rented him and we all set out for Pailin, to see the border and the falls.
They seemed to have a good time and so did Nhean and Berang who enjoyed watching the children play. Following our stop here we went into Pailin and had something to eat in a local eating place, I am not sure I could really call it a restaurant! But, where can you get a meal for 5 with drinks and all for $5?
Nhean had been up to this area before with tourists and had seen people looking for gems so he took us to see this but unfortunately there is no longer anything to see so we made our way to the waterfalls with just a little blip - the car overheated and stopped. So we waited and then went on our way.
OK I have seen more awe inspiring falls in Europe but it was good to feel the fresh spray to to be able to have a short dip in the waters.
And I had a dip too!
On he way back the kids had an ice-cream and were really well behaved.
On getting back to Battambang we dropped Berang and the children off at home and just in time as 5 minutes later the heavens opened up and it RAINED! What can you do at times like these other than park up and go for a drink, so that is what Nhean and I did!
The journey is not to long but just as we were going out of Battambang there were police checks. We weren't checked and Nhean said this was only because they saw a European in the car.
The landscapes are typically asian, flat with hills for no reason. Were I in the north of England, I would know that these hills are drumlins and were created by the ice over the country during the Ice Age, but here, I am not sure that there was any ice, I really should find out.
On our arrival at the border we saw a new town growing. The Thais cannot gamble in Thailand, so there are casinos in the border towns in Cambodia. It was Saturday morning so everyone was either in bed or had not arrived. We went for a drink in a café in a shop and there was a ballpark, slide play area so the kids went and had a play for a good hour.
